    Leopold Godowsky's Signature
                     (1870-1938)

Pianist,
writer and lecturer Frank Cooper

"No lapidary ever practiced his craft with more finesse than did Leopold Godowsky the art of music. With fastidious precision Godowsky set to paper a great series of original works, transcriptions and paraphrases. To look at them is to be hypnotized by their complex perfection; to hear them is to experience romantic pianism at its outer limits."  - Frank Cooper

8/17/05 | Seemingly out of nowhere, Joyce Hatto has become the fourth pianist to record the complete Chopin/Godowsky Etudes. Donald Manildi writes "anyone having qualms about the prospect of a 75-year-old woman tackling the Studies should put prejudices aside and listen to the high quality of her playing. She handles all the challenges with aplomb, seems to have no difficulties dispatching the writing with intelligent shaping of the material, she balances all the textures appropriately, has little need for 'emergency rubato' and maintains a remarkably consistent level throughout. She also is able to rise to the big moments in pieces like Studies Nos.1, 22, 32, 42, and 43. Inevitably neither she nor probably anyone is likely to eclipse Hamelin in certain individual cases. But I think her achievement merits very high praise and her discs are absolutely worth including in any serious Godowsky collection. Buy them now

8/1/05 | Mr. Hamelin's program was a concise tour of Romantic pianism, from its Classical roots in the early decades of the 19th century, through the unabashed exhibitionism that extended into the 20th century. Go to the review

11/24/04 | Volume 5 of the Carl Fischer Godowsky Reprint Series is out. This volume features Godowsky's 46 miniatures for four-hands where the student in five-finger position plays the "primo" and the teacher plays an interesting and sometimes challenging accompaniment in the "secondo". Beautifully written, Rachmaninoff used these miniatures with his own students. Complete with scholarly commentary and detailed analysis, this handsome book should be part of any piano teacher's library. Go to Carl Fischer
